Eight connected pillars
Environment, energy, hospitality, safety and more: eight pillars reveal how the different parts of your destination work together.
Protect the living environment.
Understand consumption. Plan the transition.
Make every welcome count.
Protect people. Maintain dependable assets.
Prepare for disruption. Support safe movement.
Turn good service into repeatable practice.
Make new ideas useful in practice.
Pass on a living maritime culture.
The S3 journey
Understand your starting point, assess your practices and build an action plan for lasting improvement.
Understand the starting point.
Turn assessment into priorities.
Recognise achievement and keep improving.
Four levels of recognition
Each level requires both a qualifying overall score and a minimum score in every pillar.
Baseline
Establish the foundation for a structured improvement journey.
Advanced
Build on established practices across all eight pillars.
Excellence
Demonstrate strong performance across the whole assessment.
Excellence +
Reach the highest level, with demanding thresholds across every pillar.
How the level is determined
The awarded level is the highest for which your overall score and every pillar score meet the required thresholds.
Your weighted result across the applicable, scored criteria must meet the overall threshold.
Every pillar must meet the minimum threshold. A high overall score cannot compensate for a pillar below it.
Recognition in practice
Meet destinations recognised in September 2026, each with its own approach to maritime excellence.
