From the first design to daily operations

S3 is designed to accompany marinas, yacht clubs and nautical centres from project design and development through to operation. It brings infrastructure, management, environmental performance and the quality of the destination into one approach. The aim is to understand how these elements work together and where improvement can make a difference.

1. Diagnosis: understand the starting point

The process begins with a review of your documents: the facility’s context, management practices and existing certifications. This creates a shared understanding of where the destination stands and prepares the next stage of assessment.

2. Validation and optimisation: turn the review into action

An on-site evaluation examines how practices work on the ground. Environmental performance is considered alongside team skills, procedures and day-to-day operations. The findings inform an action plan with practical priorities for improvement.

3. Recognition and sharing: build on what you have achieved

The assessment leads to one of four levels of recognition: Horizon, Regatta, Flagship or Sovereign. The action plan remains a guide for the next steps, while the exchange of experience helps destinations learn from different approaches to shared challenges.

Different destinations, different routes forward

There is no single model of sustainability. The September announcement illustrates this through different contexts: long-term operational improvement at Port de Saint-Florent, community engagement and marine protection in Jeddah, and the integration of environmental responsibility into the design of Ayla Marina and AMAALA Yacht Club. The common direction is continuous improvement, shaped around the destination itself.
